I'm agree with Pink Shoes , I think people who can install WP also can install a plugins. And it is not so important feature for all WP users, only fore some people.

Plugin installing its real problem for WP users?
I dont think that SMTP is needed in core WP.
Anybody can use free and easy-to-install plugins for smtp without any problem. IMHO

@dedeobi: If you want to configure the wp_mail() function to use SMTP instead of mail() there are many plugins that can already do this. I don't see any benefit from this being integrated into the WP Core...

That's a function of your host, more than WP, which uses PHP's mail() tool.

I hope there will be wordpress SMTP which allow user to set their smtp mail and port, without installing any plugin yet, and wordpress smtp has integrated with wordpress code core
