The current setting is perfect. There is no need to add extra button. If still required then adding another button "Update & Return" with "Update" will be nice.

I really hope a "save & return" or simply "save" gets implemented soon.

Oddly, in Drupal, the default behavior is to return to the list and I can't tell you how much I missed WordPress's behavior.

Yet here I am creating a new site and I repeatedly needed to make bunches of changes in the site that required the full WordPress editor. Going back to the Pages list is very time-consuming.

Bottom line: WordPress needs BOTH a Update function (as it now has) and a "Save" function which returns to the pages list/posts list.

With posts, you could assume the intent of 'forward' and 'backward' is post date, but that flies out the window with pages and CPTs, which share not those orders :/

@h_man72. Yes, that's exactly what we're all talking about, but being forced to the next/previous only, instead of having the option to go next/previous or back to posts is still limiting.

I've also been frustrated when I have a site with 4+ pages of posts or pages that when I save a page/post, I can only go back to the 1st page of all the posts/pages, instead of returning to the same place where my edited post was. All the clicks really add up in terms of time wasted. I really hope they're looking into a solution for this.

What would be really nice is having sort of a master / detail view, so clicking the back button etc. wouldn't be necessary you could just save the current content and click on the next page or post you want to edit.

As the Publish Button is big enough and there is a lot of free space on every side I would go a step further and add 2 more Functions like 'back-publish-next' where Back publishes and shows the Overview listing of Pages/Posts, publish simply stays as is and next brings you to the next Page/Post to edit on the list.
This could:
1. bring you back to the overview to select another one - but must not be the next.
2. does publish the Post/Page as we are used to.
3. enables us to go through the whole List of Posts/Pages to add e.g. an additional 'donate or whatever'-Button or change our 'call to action' on all Pages in one run

Totally agree with Original post. All it needs is an addition button. Next "Update" there should be "Update and Return". This would return to either the "All Posts" page, or the "All Pages" page, or whatever custom taxonomy you have. This gives you both options and would seriously save time.

Seriously needed feature.

sometimes I also wished not to go back to the Post / Page - Listing after making a few 'tweaks' - wouldn't it be possible to realize a Function or Button like previous / next (maybe split the publish button ??) - to be able to better 'walk' through the posts / pages one by one.

You really have to think about the most common use case for when someone is posting. I would say most people aren't going through dozens of posts making small SEO tweaks like you are. But rather most people publish a post and want to see what it looks like after -- in case they want to make a tweak to the post they just published.

Sounds more like something a plugin might be able to handle.

An option in the writing options to select:

When you publish or update a post or page, to you want to stay on the same page, or go to the page/post list.

I find it annoying when I go through each page one by one to make some small text SEO tweaks, and have to keep pressing the Pages menu item to return to the page list after a publish/update.

An option to ask what to do once updated/published would increase efficiency greatly.

What do you think?
