I wrote about something similar on my blog last night. If you're up for a challenge, try it out:

http://www.duanestorey.com/2009/05/one-wordpress-install-multiple-sites/

I managed to get a few sites to dynamically use one WordPress install. Because the .htaccess tricks each site to think they are the only one (everything is at /wp-content/) it shouldn't break plugins. There are a few problems with it, such as Google XML sitemaps tries to write to the root WP install, which doesn't really work. But I might try and turn it into a simple plugin, taking some ideas from the Virtual Multiblog implementation as well (which is similar, although slightly different).

I also like the way Virtual Multiblog works and would love to see it included into the WP core. It's a lightweight solution which will work for many without to much hassle.

It's a great feature. I want to see it in WP.

For similar ideas & how to implement, check out WP-Hive, and Virtual Multi-Blog. These techniques accomplish it with not-very-much code. It is surprising how simply they do it. So I think this magic feature could be added to WP without a lot of extra bulk, and would have great benefits for everyone expanding your web empire beyond 1 single blog, yet continue to use just 1 code base (1 thing to upgrade).
