There has been a lot of advancement in making WordPress multilingual, but there are too many suggestions in this thread now to be able to mark it as implemented, plugin, etc. Closing thread. Feel free to open new ones with specific ideas, one per thread.

I often use Wordpress as CMS and I found that the easiest way to have multilanguage is to set up multiple installs sharing one database. It is a pain to upgrade. Existing plugins are not enough reliable.

The best is for multilingual to implemented into the core.

In Canada, we often wish to give the user their choice of language interface; this needs to be a toggle, so the user can switch from one interface to another without losing where they are in the session.

Then, the user must be able to create posts in any language through their chosen language interface.

Finally, the user must be able to stipulate which language posts are delivered within their chosen language interface:
a) all posts in any single language; or
b) posts in two (or more, or all) languages, with the results combined into one display (chronological, or by tag or thread, or ... ...)

There would be much Canadian adoption of such a plug-in. I don't code; but I am willing to test and comment on other folks' installed alpha or beta possibilities.

I think this would be _really_ important... I understand that for the most of you, english speakers, this is not a problem but the rest of us want to write both in english and our native language!!

This feature could greatly improve Wordpress. I have tried to use gengo, xlanguage and other plugins but they don't integrate well with other plugins and themes. If multilingual support was included in the core of Wordpress that would help things a lot.

The PO and MO files should be installed automatically, or at least make it an option during install.

I have found very little documentation about these and how they are used. The general assumption is that a typical user doesn't need these.

Sorry, but this world is getting smaller and smaller. We need to make our sites, and WP multilingual.

Additionally, it seems like some functions within WP are not exactly multilingual-capable. I had to hack a lot of code, but still, ........

I live in Canada and we are a bilingual contry. I need French and English System and Themes translated! Gengo is an option and the best one, but it's not without faults.

also, i think one could add: let WP users choose their language of preference as they enter. the interface could be done in two or more languages and posts could have language tags! this is exactly what i would need for my blog, but instead its all in english - except for the contents :P

Add an extra column in the posts table: post_language; Encourage theme developers to express that information (with lang="xx") in their themes. Encourage designers to come up with new and novel ideas to style content in more than one language on one page.
