This is not a core suggestion, since it suggests building another product based on WP. I would suggest moving this conversation to the wp-edu mailing list, which is for talking about academic uses of WP. http://lists.automattic.com/mailman/listinfo/wp-edu

I think this is a great idea and hope to see it to fruition. I have built my own proprietary LMS in ColdFusion so I have a fairly good idea of building an LMS. I have always thought that WordPress provides an excellent basis for an LMS. We should collaborate on this. One thought though: with content being data driven, I can't see it being SCORM compliant. However, I don't think it has to be SCORM compliant.

WordPress MU would make the perfect basis for a great LMS! There are many single 'customer' GPL LMS solutions out there but none where multiple customers use a single install (like WordPress MU). I love WordPress and would use a WordPress LMS solution in a heartbeat!

These are great ideas and I am working on a site, http://www.EdNook.com which creates and aggregates many of the plugins mentioned above, and more, for schools and teachers to use. I hope that it may be useful to some of you!

Hi guys,
I might be able to help out on this.
I'm a developer/designer at a company that customizes lms's and makes scorm courses etc.
We use moodle (which has a horrible api to use and looks awful and outdated), we also use drupal (which is ok I guess). But I've recently been developing stuff with wordpress and find it slick and easy to use, and had this same thought of adding lms functionality to wordpress.

I was thinking of the same. I have certain ideas. I can outline the whole procedure, the whole need and the program and the required inputs and the functionality.

I can also outline how I see this could be achieved and from what existing wordpress functionality.

I have certain examples across different already developed plugins.

I also have some content examples to work with.

The only problem is I'm too busy for some time to learn PHP. I'm still a trial-and-error-web-researched-with-no-clue-programmer.

If some programmers are in, I'll make sure I contribute to the conceptualisation and development of a learnpress or lpress or edpress or edexpress or whatever.

Please reply asap. I'll start posting as it is.

Hi,

Currently we have:

BuddyPress - social networks, based on WordPress...
bbPress - forums, based on WordPress...
WordPress MU - multiple blogs, based on WordPress...

My idea is:

LearnPress - a Learning Management System based on WordPress!

Which would feature built-in-support for:

- Online quizzes and tests (similar to the functionality of the WP-Polls plugin perhaps?)
- Support for Learning Repositories, SCORM 2004 and advanced metadata
- Tracking student learning
- Allow students to create blogs
- Roles based on Student, Teacher, Principal, Content Author, Administrator
- Integration/Importing from other LMS such as Blackboard
- Forums (similar to BuddyPress' support for bbPress).

There are other open-source LMS's around such as Moodle, but an LMS based on WordPress would utilise WordPress' ease-of-use, collaborative community and clean UI. This could be the kick e-Learning needs!

Cheers,
