FWIW here's the trac ticket again. It has now been "blessed" as a task for WP 3.4! Thanks to everyone who voted here and If you have time please follow the ticket and test the solution to make sure this much-needed feature gets into core:

I'm all for this idea as it makes the most sense for those using images from other sites. The caption is the perfect opportunity to give credit where credit it due which mostly comes in the form of a link. Sure you can add the credit to the bottom of the post, but it looks dumb and out of place.

Is anybody reading these requests?
As a photographer and blogger I am tired of having to ask for links of my images on other sites (if I have given approval to use them).

Then I need to explain that on wordpress it is nearly impossible to link back? Why?

Also on my own photo blogs, I want the photo to link to a larger version, but (part of) the caption should be able to link something else, for example another post.

As said, very basic functionality, please fix this before adding more bells and whistles.

I guess I don't understand the problem here.... considering I can add links into captions with no problem.

I'm sure there are lots of creative uses for being able to having more than static text as an image caption. Links would be great, especially if we are borrowing images from elsewhere.
