Thanks for pointing out the ticket Justin; glad to see others are interested in this too.

Your tutorial a few months back, on custom taxonomies, really opened my eyes to the CMS potential of WP and set me on a track to learning a ton about database driven sites, many thanks for the inspiration. Working with site data/architecture really lifts the constraints of only knowing a template/theme system and the WP community makes this all really accessible.

This definitely isn't for 3.0 because we're well past feature freeze.

+1 to setting up standard APIs for custom comment types though like what we're doing for post types.

Also, see this Trac ticket:

The possibilities are limitless. By permitting users to register a new comment type and adding the relevant admin UI, plugins could be created to transform the comment system into a way to add reviews, contests, media sharing, etc. to WordPress sites.

This would definitely be part of the core, as the standard comment system would remain unchanged until a new comment type is registered by a developer.

By default, WordPress includes the
comment
,
trackback
and
pingback
types. Much like custom post types, custom comment types could be huge for turning WP into a more fully functional CMS.

Comment type API + WP = Better CMS.
