Ben, don't post the same thing in multiple places. It's kinda spamming.

+1 For better Attachment taxonomy UI support. This will make organising of images much easier in the admin.

I started to write a basic plugin to assign taxonomies to attachments. It currently does not add taxonomy pages under media in the admin, but you can use it to tag, categories images. It uses only WordPress API so should hopefully be compatible if this functionality makes it's way into core, just tries to fill in some of the missing UI gaps.

Hash-based folder is the best option for hosting with 1024 file limits per folder.

A structure with more than 256 folders, slowing down the backup process ... a simple structure of three levels / 65k folders becomes a very serious problem !

Basically we need a better media-file management (in the administration).

Thank you akrnaoline for the reply and for voting for this idea :) I have to agree with Brian akrnaoline and Supplements, he has a valid point there with folders vs. tags, but like i said before, i just want to have this implemented into WP core as this is such a obvious feature to have as a standard. Like akrnaoline, i´ve uploaded the same pictures many times, as i´ve forgotten that they were already there or couldn´t find them.

I have many photos and it wastes so much time for me to dig through the pile of pictures I've uploaded when I need to reuse it in an other article, or need to reference it somehow... I've uploaded some pictures 3 times just to access it, and this is unnecessary redundancy due to time constraints. PLEASE increase the power of WP with this functionality.

I like the ideas of easy referencing with more than one way to identify the same picture because I may forget my original way of labeling it when I first used it. This is something so useful to so many who suffer the process of picture, video, and podcast organization. A massive heap is explanatory enough, yes?!

It is always best to have the core WP incorporate vital functions as cache management of wp and media retrieval for reuse. It seems Brian Supplements has a great handle on the best practices for accomplishing this service.

Thank YOU rodonmanes for starting this request. I've thought it for years, but your initiative has gotten me to vote.

Thank YOU brian supplements for inserting your expertise into this request. rodonmanes and myself think folders, but we welcome a more sophisticated answer as brian present. As a requesting TEAM the way to resolve this issues is made SWEETER, indeed. Pleas hurry as my back end with media is a dumping ground and with this function as WP core, I'll have a filing system , eh?!

On that note, please include a way for those of us with a pile of pictures in use a method of tagging that will keep our links in tact and not burden us with a time intensive clean up... an easy way to tag what is there would be wonderful.

I appreciate the beauty of WP!

All to Love,
PS:: How do I vote for this most useful addition to WP that will bless every user, even the thousands who are not registering to vote?

A variable folder structure would get confusing. There should be tag-based file organization which would function effectively as pseudo-folders, and you would still get SEO value. This way you will not get broken links if you reorganize your images. Also you have an option to use multiple tags for the same image, whereas folders are limited in this aspect.

This structure would lend itself well to a gallery display: Images could be arranged as thumbnails in a single folder (like google image results), with a nav bar for selecting tags and other features, which would filter the results. As an option, site visitors could view your WP index gallery for the images with the index set to "public."

You get all the upside of a custom folder structure without the inherent issues (such as the inability to rearrange images among folders without breaking links). A tag structure is far more flexible than folders.

The idea is good, but still have an old problem! One of the biggest problems whoever is uploading too many files in one folder. I often had this problem and I solved it using plugins, or have made changes: hash-based uploading code.

if there would just be "Media Type" attribute. "Image", "Audio", "Video", then there wouldn´t be any point to this, as i for example, would be in the same place as i am today, having to find one picture in a huge collection of pictures, the point of this feature is to allow people to sort their media by name, time or what ever, so it will become easy to find that one picture, audio or video in a fast and easy way.

How about instead of folders, or tags, or categories, there's a "Media Type" attribute. "Image", "Audio", "Video" for example. Then you could just filter by media type.
