The nag is far simpler :) It just says 'Hey, there are newer versions. Here's the newest!' Quite literally, that's all it checks for. Makes it all lighter weight.

And you really should upgrade, as security patches aren't backported to older versions. If your server can't handle 3.x you need to move to one that will. PHP 5 and SQL 5 are standard and stable.

Thanks Ipstenu for your informative answer.

It just seemed to me that if the upgrade system knows that the current version is x.x.x; it should be easy to also have it know that x.x.x requires PHP yy and SQL zz. And even better— it could query the upgrade system with "I've got Wordpress X.y.z on a system with PHP yy and SQL zz — got anything for me?" so the nag would always suggest the highest version that can actually be used on that setup.

I didn't know about the dashboard info! Thanks.

And, in version 2.9.2 (which I now know I am on), the current version only appears on the dashboard, not the other footers.

Thanks again

Can't check before upgrading. The current version knows what IT is and what IT requires. Until you get the new one, which may have new requirements, it cannot know.

Also there are know changes in requirements from 3.0 to 3.3.x so you should be okay.

As for what VERSION you have, well, look in the 'Right now' section of your Dashboard, or the footer of every admin page :)

Problem:

"WordPress 3.3.2 is available! Please update now." — so, what version am I using? Can I actually upgrade now, or will wordpress tell me I have the wrong php or SQL?

Solution: Why not check PHP & SQL versions first, before nagging?
