The plugin directory is being cleaned up. Any plugin not updated in a year will be dropped from all search results. Further optimization is on the radar.

here are example from search (as on today, sort by relevence)

WordPress Dashboard Twitter , this plugin is listed on
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php/page/3?q=twitter&sort= at first position

and on http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php/page/2?q=twitter&sort= at second last position.

similarly "Simple Twitter Data" listed twice on 3rd and 4th page using same search.

A little improvement in directory search result would enhance user esperience
