I very much like the idea put forward by OwenKelly, though, I still firmly believe things such as this should be plugin territory.

I just cannot reconcile the idea that Wordpress would be huge if every great idea such as this were to be added to the core.

Most people will simply never use such functionality yet have to carry the burden of the extra bulky and complex package.

Great idea. A customizable TinyMCE would make this useful add-on more useful, but it might need some js coding to make some features displayed and functioned.

It would be great if the editor was able to pick up the styles I've set in my stylesheet for the current template and allow me to apply then to elements. Maybe that is a separate issue, I dunno.

@ninjaboy: yes you should be using tables - for tabular data. That's what tables are for.

There are at least a couple of plugin developers trying to give more control over the editor. It's not impossible, but it has been getting better over time.

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tags/tinymce

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tags/wysiwyg

I am the author of WP Super Edit, and I worked this summer to build a plugin with a framework for TinyMCE buttons and options.

http://www.funroe.net/projects/superedit/

Maybe someday these sort of configurations could be in Wordpress by default, unfortunately adding all the options for the editor would probably make the Wordpress download quite large.
