Yeah, that's a great idea, a WP Language Pack plugin. Come to think of it, there probably also are a few language plugins available that can already set the language in wp-config.php.

If it was that simple, we would ;)

The problem is that the language packs, like everything else in WP, are community wrangled. Check out http://blog.glotpress.org/ and http://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/

What we really need right now is a plugin that goes and gets the latest language pack and tosses it in wp-content/languages/ for you. Then you can pick.

Right now, since we don't include the languages in the main zip, it wouldn't work.

A lot of work would need to go into restructuring how those work before this could happen :/

As apposed to needing to manually edit wp-config.php and upload via FTP. I think it would make sense to have this option right there in Settings > General with the time and date settings.

Obviously, this would be more convenient for everyone, but more manageable for novice users. I find that the majority of users/customers still in 2012, have a very difficult time setting their language.

Thanks, Bryan

"any file that have 0% translation available may be offered machine translation in the beginning."

Regarding the above comment made by kallumamaji about using machine translations:

I have more than 20 years of experience in the translation field and I think I understood your comment correctly. Please let me know if I did not capture your message.

I do not agree with this idea. For the sake of speed and saving money, by using machine translation your are asking for trouble. Machine translation systems cannot conjugate verbs and select technical terms and simply use the correct words that will retain and convey the meaning of the original message. Automated systems will also use incorrect adjectives, distort syntax and punctuation. You have to consider various dialects within one language and your target audience. I do not see this as an effective and professional solution and it could potentially unnecessarily create an embarrassing situation for Xocai.

For further information, please feel free to contact me at http://www.thewordtranslators.com. Our web site is under construction. Or by visiting my Xocai web site at http://www.virginiaearl.myxocai.com

Thank you.

I thank best way to translate wordpress in various languages is to develop a wordpress plugin, that should permit inline translation to strings at their own display on wordpress front end and back-end.

Such a plugin should have ability to synchronize with GLOTPRESS so that any translation of .PO files be stored there automatically as well as be exported to live website through plugin interface.

this would reduce duplicate effort by users, and would result in better translation available via crowdsourcing.

any file that have 0% translation available may be offered machine translation in the beginning
