As a web developper, I already had the request to include grayscale thumbnail images in a theme. For exemple, in a gallery, the current image is in full colors and other images are in black and white.

Wordpress could allow theme developpers to add a new image size and specifying that the new image should be in black and white.

add_image_size( $name, $width, $height, $crop, $desaturate )

$desaturate
(boolean) (optional) Desaturate the image to have a grayscale thumbnail.
Default: false

Drupal 7 allows to do this with the desaturate effect.

With the progression of ThemeShaper's new starter theme http://themeshaper.com/2012/02/13/introducing-the-underscores-theme/ and the evolution of Twenty Twelve, can or will Twenty Eleven be updated with some of their new improvements (it looks like Twenty Twelve is several months out).

Is this crucially different from using categories or some other custom taxonomy? I have described an e-journal implementation that does this in some detail here. With a powerful theme, categories and custom taxonomies can do exactly what you want.

The alternative route would be to combine posts and pages the way you propose. It seems to me that for that, no change to the core would be needed; it could perfectly well be done by a plugin.

This is in fact possible, if one knows how to code the php of wordpress. So if you do your themes alone, this is a very good idea to display infos that are written as "posts" on different "pages", in different aggregations.

We did this (me and Vanda) on a website that uses WP as a CMS.

A simple module that will allow you to add any posts, in any order, to a page, to build a sort of reading list. Or simply an "Aggregate" object, that would simply be built from selected posts.

This would be indispensable for using WP for subscription sites, curriculum sites, etc.
