However, WordPress developer Randy Hoyt has independently continued development of the WP Category Meta plugin, which had not been updated for over two years.

Having Category custom fields would have made this so much easier to acheive at theme level.

Separate, ok. But a sensible evolution and a feature which would justify the original request to add meta data for taxonomies.
