I understand the rationale, but the execution doesn't work. The new font is harsh on the eyes, and doesn't make it easy to scan for code.

Even old "Courier New" would be fine, at the right size.

Agree. And thanks, Justin, for the fix.

How about an option in Admin panel, so a person could decide for him/herself whether to go monospace, or the expected sans. Echoes suggestion earlier by Mgmax.

The issue here is that everyone who is happy with the new font is not likely going to find this thread and -1 this idea. Thus the problem dubbed the vocal minority.

I'm not sure I have an opinion either way. I use the visual editor almost exclusively, and when I go into HTML mode, it's generally to edit the code. When I write outside of WordPress, it's in a text editor, and that in turn uses a monospaced font. To me, the change makes sense. To others, it might not. Maybe someone will release a font selection plugin. Justin's seems fine for now.

@Mgmax
Sounds like you summed it up well!

For those who use Wordpress.com, there's a greasemonkey script for Firefox by Airodyssey that works like a charm: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/104072

The other option is simply to delete Consolas from your fonts directory, since I think that the editor does rely on the font being on your computer. I'm not sure what font would replace it, but how much worse could it be?

I've had a little back and forth with Matt Thomas on his blog and I think my points echo many here. He suggested that I write a patch. This was my response, which for me gets to the heart of the matter-- this was a solution for a minority which harms the majority:

"Look, I’m very appreciative that people create this fine thing, I praise Word Press all the time, but a comment like that makes me think that the people creating it have come to think that it’s strictly for hackers and code monkeys and DIY-ers. When it’s supposed to facilitate writing, from writers, who are people who may barely have enough sense to put bracketed I’s around something they want to italicize. For every person who sees that box as a place to code, I’d bet you there are 10 who see it as a place to write. And depriving them of something that has the look and feel of print, in favor of something that has the look and feel of junior high Fortran class in 1978, is failing the main utility test for that function by misunderstanding who the audience really is.

"But here’s my simple solution that fits both potential users: give people a way to toggle between monospace and standard fonts. The people who want to code can look at Confoundas all day long; the people who want to write, can write in something that looks like writing."

This is a terrible change full of negative repercussions. The HTML editor is a a text editor, for writing and editing text. It is an appalling choice of font for that purpose.

I can't use the visual editor as I copy/paste a lot of content and end up with unwanted code as a result. Change it back or give users choice.

I hate change for the sake of change, I can't see any rationale behind this as it was perfect before!
