I'm afraid anup is wrong about adding this to the Discussons options page, the code for generating the URL field tends to be hard coded into a themes template files, so there's no easy way for WordPress core to hide it.

Although I agree with the concept it's a theme developer area, my themes have this within the options pages.

Maybe have this as an option within themes that are in the theme repository would be a good long term move. Start with a suggested feature and move to required long term so all new themes have the feature.

Actually, I think the idea is pretty good because it would keep spammers away. AND you would not have to mess with the core to achieve this.

Like anup says: A smal tickbox in the discussion options would be enough to get this done.

I meant that the display of the website field should be made optional

Currently the only way one can hide it is by css

I would really prefer that WP should do something about improving its comment form. Some suggestion:

1. Ability to add fields - that may be publicly visible or visible only to admin (like email)

2. It goes without saying, that there should be ability to edit fields.

For example, instead of standard fields currently, in the comment form one can have fields like 1) real name (hidden like email) 2) email filed (hidden like currently), 3) display name 4) city

There can be many such possibilities
