WordPress needs better search, as a whole. But there are lots of plugins that make search work a lot better already. Take a look at those, like Search Everything.

At the moment, the frontend is somewhere between global and context. It is not context-specific and can't be limited thus, but at the same time, it doesn't search everything (e.g. comments).

WP should have 2 search box widgets:

Global search
More on the lines of the current search, with additional scope, e.g. to include comments, custom posts, etc.

Context search
Search in all pages, or all posts, or a particular CPT (e.g. forums, events, places, etc), or within a category, etc.

Part of the problem isn't that WP's search is so shitty, but that Google's is so good. So it's like comparing a cheap car to a Mercedes. They both get you to the bank, but one is a better ride.

We would have to totally rewrite search, and lacking google's awesome servers and code, it's very hard to do :/

Any update on this? I would LOVE to have a more robust/advanced search feature, too!

My site has a lot of custom-type posts and to put it bluntly, it's a DISASTER trying to search my site which is why I'm using a flavor of Google's custom search. My site has a huge amount of resource articles, videos, books, blog posts, forum posts, etc. and the default WordPress search just isn’t cutting it. On my message board, I've had members complain how the search feature on my site 'sucks' and I don't blame them. I'm not the best coder in the world and I wish I could come up with a better solution... which is why I'm asking the team behind WordPress to look into improving the search functionality in WordPress.

It would be nice if users can use advanced search operators (like what the original poster used as examples), combine their search queries, pick which area of the site they want to search by limiting custom post types via checkboxes, etc. plus the ability to let them see exactly what they searched for so they can then modify the parameters.

Suggestion for WordPress.org Website:
I like the Search Themes feature where you can search by tags and/or by placing checks in the Tag Box for WordPress Themes on WordPress.org. Maybe it is just because I'm new to THIS site, maybe I just don't know how to do it. But and I can't figure out a way to search for a responsive theme, AND, SEO, AND, custom color, AND, Social Links.. etc. I've tried +responsive +SEO +Custom Color and you get matches for "match any" not filtering out those that include all of the features.
For example, the #1 priority is responsive. It returns 48 items.
Add, Theme Options to the search and you now have 200 items. I can't figure out a way to refine the search.
