Can this plugin read in my theme's CSS file?

Not at present - it is hoped this functionality will be added in the future, so the active theme's CSS classes are automatically added to the Insert / Edit class dropdown list.

Will field validation be added?

Yes - this is a stable plugin, however field validation still needs to be added.
