WordPress CMS

   Many of us know that WordPress can be fixed and contorted into being used as a CMS system, and I simple, easy to use one at that. In fact, simple and easy to use is the WordPress motto (or it should be). Why not make a WordPress that's not built only for blogs, but is built as an intuitive CMS system? Not everyone wants to make a blog. Those who want to make a website, and want to use the great simplicity of wordpress, do not want to fish through features that all say posts, and blog. They want to update sidebars, headers and footers, just like they can for the center content of the page.

   WordPress is primarily a blogging platform (as I understand it). If you want a CMS why not look at systems designed to be a CMS rather than bodging wordpress to do the job?

   Motik, your post makes it sound like it's difficult to make WordPress act as a content-management system for a non-blog website, which it really isn't.

   Even as a blogging platform, WP could still stand to learn a few things from more "traditional" CMS software. Workflow management and version control, for example, might make things much easier for some group blogs and company blogs.

   WordPress can be used as CMS right now, it only needs well thought site architecture. Of course there is few problems but all are minor ones and can be worked out as separate ideas, not as whole CMS rebuild.

   It is already pretty easy to use WordPress as a lightweight CMS--In fact, the minority of the cases I've done are set up as a classic blog. Some are blogs. Some have just static pages. Others have a static home page, but have a dated (blog) sub-section.

   What I would most like to see is better and easier control of the "home page" and the "main blog" page, as most WordPress, without as many theme hacks and plugins as I've used before.

   This would probably look somewhat like an expanded permalinks section in the options, including URLs for the main blog page (not always the home page) as well as the archive pages.

   So use home.php, and make it spit out what you want. Nobody ever said a template "has" to include the loop.

   How much more control is needed? Although, there is more coming in 2.1 already.

    I certainly agree that WP shouldn't try to be all things to all people. It's become popular because it does blogging very well.

    There's always room for improvement, however, and CMS software is one place to look for inspiration.
