We could replace a lot of the functionality of incoming link services if we allowed incoming pingbacks to home pages.
Right now if someone links to your blog home page from a post, a pingback is sent to your blog but it discards it because it's not to a specific post.
We should save this in the DB and show it on the dashboard.

A lot changes in three years eh Matt? I believe this is handled now thanks to the incoming links widget found in the dashboard area.
Mod can possibly add this to Implemented.

Actually this is still a good idea. Incoming links relies on Google, just like it used to rely on Technorati. We shouldn't need to.

Maybe better to add as a core plugin and/or have the option to turn on/off?
Not a prerequisite for many websites and keeping the database light can be important for limiting backup bandwidth, but potentially very useful to many.

Soooooooooooo... You get a pingback to notify you that someone linked to your home page from a post, and it shows in the dashboard. Then what are you going to do with it?
I mean, what value is it to your blog other than making you feel good when you're alerted that another site has linked to you? Are you going to reciprocate as a result and link to them? Then what should they do with the pingback from you, re-reciprocate?
It's not like the pingback means that Google or any other search engine is including that link in their ranking calculations. The post where the link is located may not even be indexed and therefore not counted.
I have pingbacks enabled, but really ignore them for the most part.
About the best place to check for inbound links is to go to Yahoo! and search for link:yourURL. This gives the most exhaustive list of backlinks. LINK: operator at Google only typically shows a tiny sample of inbound links they know about. Even in Google's Webmaster Tools they only show a sample. They even include links that are NOT counted like NOFOLLOW links and links from pages known to be under penalty. Google doesn't want you to know which links they count.
You shouldn't be focusing on looking at your backlinks anyway. Simply build links and forget about them.

Relying on Google blog search is currently extremely buggy. As an example I missed a link from RWW not too long ago, and only noticed it because Google did decide to show the link from a scraper.
If it was made optional, I think the data would be useful, especially for blog farm owners in 3.0
I don't think it will add much to the database size, as most links go to posts anyway.
There is less benefit linking to a home page for spammers as they have no chance of a visible link.

I would say no links at all by default - it is for blog owners to see they have been linked to by someone, not for spammers to get a link from a home page.

I agree with Andy, this feature will be certainly abused by spammers.
