Remove nofollow from WordPress

   Nofollow seemed like a good idea when it was first designed, but it shouldn't be enabled by default in future WordPress releases, because:

   • It hasn't stopped or even reduced comment spam. Akismet stats (and my own, more limited, experience) show that comment spam is more prevalent than ever before
   • It is no longer necessary to deprive PageRank to comment spam that gets through, because filtering solutions in WordPress (I'm thinking of Akismet specifically, but also SK2) have improved to the extent that it is very rare for any spam comment to be approved - at worst it gets moderated (still no need for nofollow).

   There are people they don't have anything to say, but they write comments, because of their own pagerank grow... This is not the type of spam that is possible to catch with akismet.

   I think people should be able to deactivate nofollow, and do not have a need to download a third-part plug-in.

   No-Follow should be a simple on-off checkbox in the backend. Part of core. No third-party plugin. People who spend the time to contribute worthwhile comments (why would you keep any others) deserve the nod.

   Enough of Google.

   I agree. If you would like to make the edits yourself, here's how to remove nofollow on the author and on the comment text.

   I've just upgraded to 2.3.1 and all of a sudden the comments I've gotten since the upgrade will not allow the url for the author - even my own, and even if the commenter has left comments before. I've tried several plugins, gone in and changed the code in my comment-template.php page, and still no go. No-follow really needs to be optional according to the preferences of the individual blog author - and a "switch" in the admin panel so that we can successfully implement our prefence is the new must-have, IMO.

    When nofollow will be optional you can reward serious and constructive comments by removing the nofollow. This will be a trigger for commenters to add serious replies to your articles. This will also raise the level of your blog!
