Fix the [caption] system to allow links inside captions.

As it stands there seems to be no way to insert a link inside a caption/image inserted using the media uploader.

If you struggle with distinctions between ' and " then you can trick the inserter into not filtering out your link, but then switching between the visual and code editors erases the link again, leaving just incoherent text that assumes the presence of the deleted link.

This is a HUGE oversight in the media uploader. Links to the source of an image (esp. open content like Creative Commons images from Flickr) are one of the most common and important use-cases for captions.

Making links of all types work inside captions should be a high priority.

    Absolutely. A clear bug.

Very very important to encourage, by making easy, the proper attribution of photographers and artists. I too use open content like Creative Commons images from Flickr and want to do the right thing. I searched at length and played with options that are really not suited. This info should be permanently associated with the image.

Yep I agree. I just checked my WP 3.1 and this doesn't look like it's implemented. I think it would be nice to allow captions to be edited in the visual editor.

Indeed, this is a major oversight, and I'm suprised the issue hasn't been raised sooner. Look forward to seeing any kind of patches or workarounds.

I echo all of the above. I see that this was put forward (in Ideas) by people in 2008 and here we are two years later and it's nowhere. Why on earth aren't WordPress listening to this? It's surely such a basic thing to implement but such a big issue.

Why, for instance, don't they get together with Flickr? At least that would be a start.

I would assume the WP folks monitor these boards and implement changes in subsequent WP releases. Perhaps there is a good reason why this has not been addressed?
