If "let us force a line break" is such a popular idea, maybe it's time for a discussion of including a better WYSIWYG editor. FCKeditor, perhaps?

I can't utilize the editor since it doesn't support multimedia and scripting. I'd recommend the ability to do both.
I just posted a related suggestion before finding this one. I was suggesting the option of disabling the WYSIWYG due to some occasional conflicts with embedded code snippets. Overall the included editor works fine for me though - 99.9% of the time it does everything I want it to do.
The WYSIWYG editor in WordPress sucks. Almost anything would be an improvement.
More specifically, I find the popup windows extremely SLOW. :(
But how do you define better? If we can break it down to individual user experience problems with this editor then that may provide a landscape to consider other editors.
Better than the current system:
Simply the option to switch the wysiwyg editor off by default would make life so much prettier.

Yes, absolutely. In Mambo and Joomla, disabling the WYSIWYG editor can be as simple as going into 'Global Configuration' and selecting 'No WYSIWYG Editor.' If WordPress is so simple, why can't disabling the fancy editor follow the theme?
And specifically an advanced editor that offers:
- bold/italics/overstrike/subscript/superscript, local fonts & colors
- html-source viewer/editor and remove formatting
- simple lists, clean and tidy tables...
- centered or full justification for static pages
All this is doable by plugins (such as the Advanced WYSIWYG editor), but integration is lacking (esp. justification easily creates annoying divs that behave badly with css'es).
And oh, I want those (P STYLE="HEIGHT:2EM")(/P) vertical space thingies for my static pages. They are annoying to type constantly.
