Ideas

Implemented: Improved Draft System

  1. Drafts are currently handled poorly, as are drafts by people without publish rights.

If you have more than 10 drafts going (with many high-posting blogs do), it can be easy to lose track of things. We need a better way of presenting drafts to the user, and presenting “ready for publish” drafts by unprivileged users to the site's Editor roles. It seems silly to support “Contributor” and “Editor” roles and “save, but not publish” permissions without some sort of framework to connect the features.

I submit this as a joint idea because I think a good implementation might have one page for both (your drafts and others' drafts).

We need way to mark a draft as "ready-for-publish" Instead of a "Publish" button, we have a "Submit for Publishing" or something like that, which makes it show up as "ready for publish" on Editors' installs. Until then, they show up on the Drafts page (for both the author and Editor roles).

  3. Excellent. I might add that I've been playing with a few tools that allow posting of say, a daily or weekly summary of your del.icio.us links ... and they allow posting as draft by default ...

If you ignore them (e.g. by posting using an app for a couple of weeks, instead of coming to your page's admin section) what you'll want most is an easy way to just check off a bunch of them for bulk deletion or publishing ...

  4. that sounds awesome! mass management of drafts really should be included. with the feedwordpress plugin, RSS feeds are aggregated into post drafts and they clutter up my drafts section, a way to manage drafts would be great. possibly a creation of different folders to organize drafts as well as the previously mentioned mass deletion would be so helpful!

  5. This isn't so much about a poor handling of drafts as it is a complete lack of workflow management. If WP is to be a viable option for group blogs or mult-sectioned business sites with several contributors, a good workflow system must be implemented.

Going from user levels to roles was a good first step; now it's time to take it even further. Give us approval queues, per-category roles that only allow a contributor to publish in their own area, etc.

I write a lot of content that isn't time-sensitive so it tends to chill. I usually have about 100+ drafts lying around. I mucked around with the admin templates to break it down by category, but it is still tremendously awkward to work with. Powerful drafting functionality is right near the top of my list of desired improvements.

  7. Ypu yup yup, this really makes sense for multi-publisher blogs and wewbsites based on WP - good call.

Different draft levels would be great also. The way it is now a two line idea post is given the same status as a 2000 word essay waiting for final polishing.

  12. Yes, multiuser capabilities should be an area to improve with the next Wordpress version.

  13. This would greatly encourage professional use of WordPress, especially reverse publishing--repurposing content for online "backwards" into a print product. This is the way print publishers are headed, so this would be a very forward-thinking approach to the problem and would situate WordPress very well at the head of the pack.

  14. I agree with this 100%! Let's make it happen! :D

  15. I think the drafts have to be managed the same as the posts, with the possibility of delete and edit in principle. Later the managing system can be enhanced for colaborators, etc.

  16. One frustration about working with desktop posting clients such as ecto is that it's not possible to post from them and have the post land on the WP site in Draft mode. I understand this is due to a limitation in XML-RPC. Can XML-RPC be modified or enhanced, or can some other workaround in WP be provided, to allow this?

One multi-author site I work on is multimedia-heavy, and the media management tools in ecto are far superior to using the WP back-end. But we can't use ecto because posts have to land on the site in Draft mode.

  17. Just have a look at WordPress 2.3-alpha. The draft system is improved. :)
