Idea: Choose a better WYSIWYG editor

If "let us force a line break" is such a popular idea, maybe it's time for a discussion of including a better WYSIWYG editor. FCKeditor, perhaps?

  2. I can't utilize the editor since it doesn't support multimedia and scripting. I'd recommend the ability to do both.

  3. I just posted a related suggestion before finding this one. I was suggesting the option of disabling the WYSIWYG due to some occasional conflicts with embedded code snippets. Overall the included editor works fine for me though - 99.9% of the time it does everything I want it to do.

  4. The WYSIWYG editor in WordPress sucks. Almost anything would be an improvement.

  5. More specifically, I find the popup windows extremely SLOW. :(

  6. But how do you define better? If we can break it down to individual user experience problems with this editor then that may provide a landscape to consider other editors.

  7. Better than the current system:

    • Supports in-post script tags. (For me, this is a must, since I write a lot of JS code samples for languages like jQuery. This is impossible with the current editor and I have to hand craft every post.
    • The same with anything else like objects and multimedia stuff.
    • Notepad.

  8. Simply the option to switch the wysiwyg editor off by default would make life so much prettier.

Yes, absolutely. In Mambo and Joomla, disabling the WYSIWYG editor can be as simple as going into 'Global Configuration' and selecting 'No WYSIWYG Editor.' If WordPress is so simple, why can't disabling the fancy editor follow the theme?

And specifically an advanced editor that offers:

    - bold/italics/overstrike/subscript/superscript, local fonts & colors
    - html-source viewer/editor and remove formatting
    - simple lists, clean and tidy tables...

    - centered or full justification for static pages

All this is doable by plugins (such as the Advanced WYSIWYG editor), but integration is lacking (esp. justification easily creates annoying divs that behave badly with css'es).

And oh, I want those (P STYLE="HEIGHT:2EM")(/P) vertical space thingies for my static pages. They are annoying to type constantly.

  11. Yes. Possibilities to edit fonts -
other than by typing in the font tags and stuff -
is something I keep missing constantly.
Also when/if I need to add some code into a post,
it's a drag to go into the user options, turn off the
editor and then go back to edit the post. Grr!

It was suggested somewhere that there should be an option
to place code without it being automatically formatted by wp.
Also I would love an option to put in a post a small window
where I could type e.g. a sample of code for others to
copy-paste it into their own blogs.

  12. If you need to turn off the WYSIWYG editor, simply edit your user profile and uncheck the option labeled:
Use the visual editor when writing

I administer one Drupal-based site. The only thing I like about Drupal is that its TinyMCE plugin allows you to customize which TinyMCE buttons are displayed, and to set this on a per-usergroup basis. TinyMCE can be a very capable editor, but Wordpress's stripped-down version isn't as good as it could be. Supposedly, you can add options to it by editing Wordpress's config files. A more user-friendly method would be helpful.

  14. A WYSIWYG editor that actually functions properly on a Mac browser - Firefox or Safari - is absolutely essential. TinyMCE no workee.

    Try EditorMonkey. http://www.rajprasad.net/plugins/editormonkey/

You can use either TinyMCE or FCKeditor. I use it now on almsost all sites I design for clients as well as on my personal sites. If you know some javascript/PHP,you can hack it to make it do whatever you want. I created a custom version that I use so I could integrate relation tags for the Lighbox javascript. I'm not a great javascript programmer by any means, but it only took me about two hours to work it all out exactly how I wanted it.

Totally absolutely agree with superfreakymemories - wysiwig needs to be COMPATIBLE with Macs. Also agree with converting2wp a wysiwig that will NOT let someone use a line break needs replacing! See also this thread Force line break inspite of Tiny MCE editor using a Mac that is still unresolved

TinyMCE doesn't cut it anyway at all. If you're going to bundle it at least provide instructions for how to excise it like the cancer it is.

TinyMCE is one of the best and I'm working with it on my projects very successful! Have a look at the demo page of tinymce. The should just be an option page for tinymce.

    What about XStandard? http://www.xstandard.com/

I don't have much experience with it but I've heard some pretty good things. It might not be enough out of the box, but it's apparently highly configurable through XML files and a rich API.
