Idea: Open ID Integration

Integrate Open ID (http://openid.net/) into the Core Wordpress files. That way we don't have to sign up for each of the wordpress blogs out there, and can instead use our Open IDs!

    Cheers,
    Kitty

  2. While there is a plugin for this, I think it'd be great if it was a part of core. The would allow the OpenID login box to be automatically included as part of the theme (currently requires editing the theme files if you don't want it under the comment box) as well as greatly expand the number of blogs that support it.

  3. Absolutely, this is a great feature, and needs to be in the core, not simply as a plug in....

Agreed, I'd like this, although AlexandreP has this to say:

  5. The OpenID plugin is excellent, but as part of the core would be even better. A couple points:

    1) There is an OpenID bounty program that pays out $5000 to any project that adds OpenID to their core. You'll notice they have WordPress listed as one of the projects they hope to take up the challenge.

    http://iwantmyopenid.org/bounty

    2) The issue that is raised by AlexandreP, who links to a message from Matt Mullenweg (in 2005) is that there were competing identity standards. Since then, of the 7 that he lists 5 (OpenID, Ping Identity, Identity Commons, Sxip and LID) have collapsed together into one and it's called OpenID. He suggests letting them duke it out and they have. Now we have OpenID. The other 2 he mentions are Yahoo (now BBAuth) and Passport. Those are both proprietary.

In summary, OpenID has emerged as the de facto, decentralized, open standard for identity and WordPress gets paid to add it to the core. Seems like a no-brainer.

  6. Long time listener, first time caller ... would love to see OpenID support baked into WordPress.

  7. I've been waiting for months for this to happen.

I can offer my experience integrating OpenID into phpBB3 (WiP). Hope it would help.

+1 to what clockwerks said, as one of the editors of the OpenID spec I'd love to award one of the bounties to the WordPress community!

  9. I recently read blog replies about how to usurp identities using OpenID (easy to find by searching "openid" and "phishing" on Google), so I actually am no more that interested in seeing OpenID widely adopted. But OpenID is quickly evolving, it will surely become more secure by the future and may become somewhat interesting.

Now, I've seen embryo of project about a web Jabber identification (http://shearproject.info/jcas/), which may also be an interesting alternative to study for unique ID around web apps.

Agreed, connecting all the wordpress blogs out there would be one good reason to Use OpenID.

  11. OpenID is very well thought out. I'd love to have a single signon for Wordpress weblogs.

  12. Oh yeah! I've gotta sign up for this!

There's already a WordPress plugin out there as well:

  13. I don't think it should be integrated into core.

But I wouldn't mind seeing it bundled with the official releases as a plugin.

I'd much rather Wordpress create an internal system than use some third-party system that has obvious flaws.

  16. Ajd777: Based on the positive response to this idea so far, the flaws must not be so obvious. Why don't you elaborate?

This absolutely must be a part of core. The plugins currently available can't provide the same level of integration. Ideally I'd also like to see support for the Simple Registration Extension (http://openid.net/specs/openid-simple-registration-extension-1_0.html).

  17. As the author of the plugin linked above (http://blog.verselogic.net/projects/wordpress/wordpress-openid-plugin/), I fully support discarding it entirely and building OpenID support directly into Wordpress and Wordpress mu.

  18. If you think there are flaws in the OpenID system that are somehow not matched by equally damaging but different flaws in the current system, then you're misinformed or just stubborn.
