Currently it moves them to the default category.

    ...or category of your choosing?

  3. That sounds very sensible and shouldn't be too difficult to implement.

  4. I like this idea but agree with SeorEpiphyte. There should be functionality allowing the user to move children to a parent of their choosing.

This one feature would improve the manageability of Wordpress blogs tenfold.

  5. Sounds easy to implement, huge management benefits, untold time saved.

I don't know if this is a good idea. Perhaps an option that would allow you designate where the child objects go, like a pull down menu option. I can think of a lot of instances where I would not what the child objects to be thrown into the parent category by default. I currently use a plugin to batch change my category assignments before making this kind of a change, because I may want to parse these posts into various subcategories.

The root of the issue is that if you are deleting a child, there is no simple answer as to where the posts that belong to that child object should go. They were put in that sub-category for a reason, and assigning a category, other than Uncategorized, is a little presumptuous.

  11. If implementing this, it wouldn't be much problem to add 'choose category' select, with an options to move to parent or default.

  12. I agree the default behavior is a little odd, but just moving the posts to the parent directory isn't the best. The user should be given the option of moving them to other categories of his/her choice, via a drop-down menu or something similar.

  13. Your best bet is to delete all your categories because they are the most useless feature there is on Wordpress.

This way you won't need to hassle reassigning things. Solution would take a lot of code and I don't think Wordpress should flaw the core code with things like that. There are many more important things to focus on.

Maybe a plugin should emerge if there is such high demand.

  14. Isn't it easier to create new categories rather than creating multiple sub-categories? Many of the blogs that I've come across tend to have a list of categories that don't have the sub-directories to worry about. This seems to be easier than worrying about where to stick a new category.

  15. I find it easier to just create the new categories, involves a whole heap of management issues that you'd normally run into later.

  18. Before deleting the sub-cat, promote the parent cat to be default category. This way all posts are moved to it. Now replace your previous default category and you are done.
