Ideas

Implemented: More obvious "Edit" link for comments

  1. To edit a post or a page, you click its name. That makes sense. To edit a comment, you click the name of the commenter or the name of the site that left the comment. That makes considerably less sense. The name of the person or the name of the site isn't an obvious "title" for the comment, and clicking this is unintuitive.

Many people (both WP beginners, and long-time users) are confused by this. There isn't really an intuitive place to "hide" the edit link for comments -- so maybe we should just bite the bullet and make a straight-up "Edit" action link.

  2. I personally expect that clicking the Commentors name is going to take me to their URL instead of editing.

Not everyone fills out the url, so at first it took me a moment to realise that the url was shown on the 2nd line if one was ever given..

  3. I agree Mark, we need an edit icon or link for comments. I would also like to see an edit link or icon brought back for posts and pages for exactly the same reason.

  4. sacredpath -- I disagree on pages and posts. I think the post/page title is a logical click target for editing the post/page from within the admin. The title is a valid and representative "handle" for that post/page. There is no such "handle" for comments. Regardless, this Idea is about the comment edit link.

  5. I agree with Mark on this one too... perhaps it'd most appropriate to add a simple "Edit Comment" or "Edit" under the Actions column?

  6. Wholeheartedly agree! Prior to upgrading to 2.5, I had no problems editing comments that needed it. With 2.5, I couldn't find any way to do that.

Usernames link to websites - this is accustomed/expected behavior, and as I don't want to visit every website for questionable posters, (and I was already ON my own site) I never clicked the names. As a result, I was very frustrated with what I saw as a decline in functionality. Now I find out that it's just been hidden from me, not removed.

Yes, please go back to having a clear link for editing comments.

  7. I think a simple "(edit)" link next to each commenter's name would suffice.

  8. I would like to see "Ozh' Absolute Comments" built into WP ;)

The plugin is awesome and would be a great feature for WP.

I thought for a while the edit facility might have been removed altogether. Having an Edit button is important for ease of use.

  11. Yes please fix this, very annoying!

  12. Actually, what I'd prefer is if we made the comment itself clickable, rather than add an edit link. In Flickr, for example, if you want to edit the text under a photo, you click the paragraph and it turns into a text box containing the previous text. Then you simply edit it, and click out of the box to save your changes. Couldn't we do something like this relatively easily? We could even have a Save button show up under the text field if you like that better than clicking outside the box.

  13. I agree as well. Before I ever even tried to edit a comment in WP 2.5, I saw several questions in the forums and such, so I knew how to do it. But still, the first time I went to edit a comment I was totally lost and almost forgot what I was trying to do. I tend to rely on links or buttons that contain the word of what I want to do. If things get too intuitive and not at all labeled, then I'm sure there will be people with slightly different intuitions who have a really hard time finding things.

  14. Agreed. I can't believe that I had to go to the FAQ just to edit.

When this many people are this confused, and start thinking that the ability to edit comments must be dependent on what theme you're using, it ain't a feature, it's a bug. And it's a sad indictment of the WP development process that the original poster had to present this bugfix as an 'idea' rather than filing it in Trac.

  16. Well, I actually thought the ability to edit comments had gone away.

A more intuitive method of editing comments may be to do it inline, like the page slug is on the post edit page.

  17. Completely agreed!

I can't believe I had to do a web search just to figure out how to edit a comment in WordPress.
