Idea: Access to TinyMCE Plugins and Options

IF WP is going to stick with Tiny MCE it would be great if there was a Tiny MCE Plugin page where one could add functionality to the WYSIWYG editor (just as we do to Wordpress itself). Tiny MCE already has lots of plugins for all sorts of needs.

I've hacked my Tiny MCE so that I can add functions to the write screen menu via span tags and CSS. For instance, I have a "float right" and "float left" drop down I can use for pictures. It'd be great if WP made this sort of customization easier. At the least, the key Tiny MCE components could be available on the files menu.

  2. Yes, this is really needed!
    - change the default-button (add, delete, re-arrange)
    - add new button of the tinyMCE-core (like the 'headline 1'-dropdown)
    - add custom buttons for plugins

  3. ooo, I'd love that float right and float left functionality for images.

  4. definately second that. tinyMCE is a quite stable base but it's too locked down. there are so many wp-plugins that need implementation in posts via html, giving people the option to simply write small tinyMCE plugins and include them with their wp plugins would certainly improve using tinyMCE

    nmallory,

If you want me to send you the file by e-mail, I can. It took me a while to dig through the Tiny MCE docs to figure out where to modify, but the mod was actually very simple. Just one line per style.

I also added span tags that make "fancy quotes." Basically it's just a larger font with a certain width, but it creates nice magazine style highlight quotes right from the WYSIWYG editor.

Here's a partial list of plugins. There are many many more being offered.

  7. ABSOLUTELY! I've been looking for a way to JUST add a [header] button to the rich text. It stinks having to use the HTML feature all of the time just to insert an < h3 > to my tags.

Oh, and don't take that as "take away the HTML feature" because most of us would die without it.

  8. Oh, yeah, I'm forever in the HTML editor.

  9. I too find myself spending way more time in the HTML editor than I want to. It would be great if TinyMCE would be easier to extend and customize. I was using the EditorMonkey plug-in, but it is no longer supported and was a complete secondary installation of TinyMCE.

I would love to be able to add just a few more buttons to TinyMCE without having to wade through that code. As mentioned earlier, <H1> - <H6> would be great for headings. Float would be nice as well, but at least it is available through the picture editing pop-up dialog.

  10. Hi, I'm italian blogger, and me too like to extend the tinymce funtions in WP with the tinimce plugin. Not only Just for a better use of the code (that I think is one of the goal of this project, and is for this that I use it), but for give more accessibility to the readers, for let growing the use of some tag (like acronym, cite, q, ecc.) and attribute (like lang and hreflang - important for blind spell browser). I think is important for some kind of readers, and browsers. Now is very difficult to customize, and add the tags in the html editor take a lot of time, if you write long posts.

I need subscripts, superscripts (for footnotes) and clean basic lists and tables (for key-value pairs such as events and event dates, names and assigned tasks, events and participation cost...). I want full justification as the "flying" text block border sometimes looks ugly, sometimes good.

All this is possible with TinyMCE plugins.

I would also like some *toolbar customization*
    (editing scripts is so cumbersome)

Just want to add that the new version of Wordpress (2.1) is great so far but it includes a new version of TinyMCE which is completely incompatible with my previous hacks. I spent an hour on the Tiny website and could not find anyone who knew how to alter the buttons in the latest version of Wordpress.

We really need to be able to at least turn on and off the buttons which are already included with Tiny. The "styleselect" feature is hugely useful for anyone who knows a little CSS, allowing you to add span tags that will float your pictures, change your font size, all sorts of things. Also, I agree with the person above who noted that the table button would come in very handy on occasion.

Now more than ever, we need access to more Tiny power.

The only thing I like about Drupal is its TinyMCE plugin, which allows you to configure buttons and features available on the editor, and even give different usergroups different features all from within the Drupal interface. I understand that you can edit Wordpress's TinyMCE configuration by editing the appropriate files, but a more user-friendly version would be great.

I just want the option to add a linebreak. It's simply unacceptable that you can't add one single line break!!!!

  17. You guys know about the Advanced Toolbar in WP2.1 that pops up when hitting ALT+V (IE) or ALT+SHIFT+V (Firefox)? Lots of formatting options there.

I second the wish for more easy customization of the TinyMCE toolbars though. Something like Drupal's implementation (where you can simply should which buttons show up where on a per-button, per-toolbar basis) would be superb. (Edit: Ah, I see that AdamBradley above also has tasted the Drupal TinyMCE sweetness.)

  18. codeispoetry - WHAT... 'Advanced toolbar', no I didnt know about it and I think alot of other people missed that one - WOW!! Do you know how to get it to show this by default - this would sort 90% of people! No tables, but you shouldnt really be using them anymore anyway!

I have used all sorts of editor plugins, Editor Monkey (sandly long neglected, was excelent in the past), Advanced WYSIWYG Editor amongst others. I have also hacked it up a bit in the past, but it's real hastle when it comes to upgrading the core WP files and sorting the hacks again.

Some way of managing TinyMCE plugins would be great, or at least be able to re-arange the icons - I had a plugin that did that once, not usre which one, I think it was Editor Monkey.

WP rocks in lots of ways, but I think everyone would agree that the actual content editor leaves a-lot to be desired - especially for non-techie end users!
