@iDope: WP No Category Base works seemlessly!!!! Many, many thanks, I have searched high and low, edited, re-edited .htaccess files, WP configuration files all to no avail, and from your plugin simply install, active and works... sweet.

@all: I'm using WP 2.7.1 the plugin can be found and installed directly through the dashboard under Plugins/Add New

@prasadthombre that works but that is causing a conflict with the pages structure.

@prasadthombre: That won't work unless you make changes to the rewrite rules as well.

P.S: I noticed there was an extra double quote in the URL. Here is the correct URL:

Change->

To ->

I have made a plugin "WP No Category Base" that will take care of this without breaking anything else or requiring other plugins. Check it out!

I couldn't champion this more. It's the only reason I'm sticking with Joomla and Drupal for most sites at the moment (OK, not only but least easily resolved problem). If I really need to give my sites sections this is certainly the first step I would love Wordpress to make towards that. If we could finally get this by the next mini update I would be dropping the heavier CMSs entirely.

All of these plugins and redirections and regex and core hacks and semi-working-with-a-completely-standard-install-of-a-certain-version-of-wordpress-with-no-other-plugins-especially-not-that-one is all well and good. But you're opening up a can of worms for the future.

Currently I see the best option as renaming 'category' to 'c' in admin.

Any of your site visitors editing the url manually should be shot anyway. Survivors should be shot again. :)

I'm not sure if anybody has mentioned this yet but 'category' is crap for SEO.

When editing the rewrite.php, I get 404 errors for pages, but I can still see categories. The reason why I'm trying to eliminate /category is because I want it to be SEO friendly for a blog that I am working on. /category is not relevant, and doesn't fit into the old site structure.

Drat! The /. trick does not work with nested categories. Now what?
