Exactly Jowah, you read my mind, that is actually what should be done, I would like to see it as a native WordPress feature, as a built-in function.
Bytheway the plug-in which offers this that possibility is called Maintenance Mode. When logged in admins can browse the page, and for normal visitors you could display a message with a reason.

Glad to see you supported it.

Putting site offline for normal visitors but still browsable for admin would be an AWESOME idea.
I know there is a plugin that does this, but I think it should be a native function.

Every existing feature is pretty much well welcomed, but there's one that might be handy and come into work to most of us. This idea come up on my mind while in this very morning I decided to upgrade to 2.5 and here it is. Before we upgrade we're required to deactivate all the plug-ins, but in some cases our blog layout is based on some of those plug-ins so when deactivated it'll ruin the look and it's not pretty to have a disordered outlook in front of the visitors and readers. Hence, I thought it might be more than useful if a feature could be implemented allowing us to put our blog offline and back online with a single radio button or checkbox and an option to display some informative text of what's going on. This way we could simply notify our readers that about the reason why the blog is offline and it's duration for how long it'll stay so. I think most of bulletin board systems offer this possibility.
Bytheway a feature implemented in wordpress would be much better than a separate plug-in that offers that opportunity. What are your thoughts about this ?
