"unless you've intentionally made the text area larger" Yes I have made it larger as I copy and paste most of my content.
So on a long post or page it can be difficult to find an area of text in such a small window with a tiny scroll bar.;)

You shou;dn't need to scroll to the top at all. The edit screen, unless you've intentionally made the text area larger, always keeps the wysiwyg buttons on the top where you can easily click them.

The wysiwyg buttons could be on the side of the add post or page editor and follow you down the page as you scroll down in long posts.
Its annoying if you are trying to use the wysiwyg editor when its off the page in long posts, you need to continuously scroll back to the top to use the buttons.

Thought I'd add the link to this blog post proposing one simple UI change that might address both sides of this debate: http://www.parisvega.com/if-ya-wanna-click-it-ya-better-put-a-button-it/

Leave it outside of the editor but make it an obviously clickable button. I'll hopefully make a plugin to do this in the next week or two and add a link here.

I'll second this! My customers don't know HTML and don't want to know HTML, even when shown something simple like how to make text bold. One workaround is to format a sentence or link in a fake post or page, copy the code from the HTML tab, and then paste it into the Text widget, but that's kind of tedious. I usually install BlackStudioTinyMCE on customer sites as it pulls in the WYSIWYG editor on the sidebar, but it can act a little flukey and I like to limit the use of plug-ins.

Hate to say it, but Blogger wins hands-down for this sort of functionality. My customers who have moved from Blogger to WordPress wonder where the various "gadget" options are (as Blogger calls them) that let them add links, code and formatted text in Blogger rather easily.

Would LOVE to see this functionality added to the WP core software!

There is big support for the call here for a better editor than TinyMCE, and I agree strongly. Something I dream of for this new editor is the following: we should be able to draw a square anywhere in the editor to create a separate content-box (a DIV behind the scenes), that can be filled with text, images etc. There should be options for placement: left, right, absolute position relative to the page, or relative to the text (anchored). Also of course options for border, margins, padding, colour, transparency, and so forth. These content-boxes should be able to have other content-boxes within them. THEN we would have complete control of the layout almost similar to InDesign!
