I just imported my tumblr into WordPress. Every post was imported as Uncategorized. I can add the proper categories to the posts using the Bulk Edit function, but I can't remove the category Uncategorized. So add me to the voices asking for this feature.

For the same reason the importers aren't a part of core anymore. Bulk category changes are like permalinks - you shouldn't change them, as provides a poor user experience. Users won't be able to find things when they all change.

So since they're used rarely, maybe once or twice in a sites life, they don't need to make core bigger.

I have a whole 'rarely used code' rant ;) It's stuff that doesn't get tested a whole lot, due to the nature of what it is, so pulling it out of core and into a plugin actually means any bugs can get fixed right away.

@ipstenu just curious why this doesn't belong in core it is highly useful for any site which has a large number of posts and needs to re-organize categorization. the fact that the only plugin that provides this functionality doesn't allow for filtering proves in my mind that it does belong in core unless there's some great reason why adding existing selected categories to the bulk edit readout isn't easy or causes other problems.

Not everything can be in core :)

This is something not used by the majority of people, and it's needed once in a while for very specific situations. Perfect plugin realm for now.

I think I know what you mean.
Thank you for this.

But the important thing is this:
A feature that should be the core of WordPress.

Just looking at it intuitively, when I saw that none of the categories were checked, I thought that whatever I had checked or unchecked was what all of the selected posts would have when updated.

Alas, this is not the case. For me, that would be the ideal.

The only plugin that I have found that allows you to have that kind of control is Mass set Categories:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mass-set-post-categories/

It shows an array of all of your categories at the top and then each of your posts below it in the normal reverse chronological order along with all of the categories for each post. The categories that are currently associated with the posts are checked, and you can check or uncheck what you want and the plugin makes those changes when you click submit, either individually or for a number of posts.

Its biggest drawback is that there is no way to filter or search the posts. So if you have hundreds of posts, you obviously have a very long list to go through. The browser's search function can be of great help in this regard.

The bulk action on the links edit panel should allow you to change/add a category to all selected links.

This could also apply to posts/pages.

Main use: those importing their blogs into WP, or refactoring their site.
